How To Schedule Defragmentation In Windows

Disk defragmentation is an important part of computer maintenance. Fragmentation is when files on your computer are stored across different areas of your hard drive. This can happen when files are deleted, leaving empty space on the hard drive. When larger files are saved, parts of the file may be in different open areas. All hard drives experience an increase in fragmentation over time unless they aDefragmentingre defragmented. Defragmentation moves parts of files so that the entire file is in the same area. Through the Windows Task Scheduler, you can schedule defragmentation of your hard drive at regular intervals. You just need to follow some very simple & easy steps:-

Steps:-

  1. Open the Windows Task Scheduler wizard by opening the Start menu and then selecting "Control Panel." Click on "Performance and Maintenance" and then double-click on "Scheduled Tasks." Double-click on "Add a New Task."
  2. Click the "Next" button. Click on "Browse" in the next window. As a default, your main hard drive should be displayed (the C: drive). Double-click on the "Windows" folder. Scroll right until you see the "system32" folder and double-click on it. Scroll right until you see "defrag.exe" and select it. Click the "Open" button to save your selection and close the browse window.
  3. Select the radio button that corresponds to how often you want your hard drive to be defragmented. Once a month should be sufficient. Then click the "Next" button.
  4. Select the time and day of the month, as well as which months, you want the defragmentation to run. Choose a day and time that you will have the computer on, but not when you will need the computer, because defragmentation will take most of your computer power while it runs. Click the "Next" button when you are done.
  5. Enter your user name and password in the appropriate spaces. If you do not enter your password, the task may not run. Click the "Next" button.
  6. Check the "Open Advanced Properties for This Task When I Click Finish" box, and then click on "Finish."
  7. In the "Start In" box, enter the drive letter of the drive you want defragmented, such as C:/. Then click on "OK."
