Blu-ray Disc Capacity Could Increase from 25 GB to 33.4 GB Per Layer

As you know, Blu-ray Disc is the next-generation optical disc format for high definition audio-video and high-capacity data software applications. As per the current Blu-ray standards, a single-layer Blu-ray Disc holds up to 25 gigabytes of data and a double-layer Blu-ray Disc holds up to 50 gigabytes of data. blu-raySony and Panasonic worked together and developed a software, which would increase the per-layer storage capacity of Blu-ray Discs from 25 GB to 33.4 GB. They ahve developed a new method of evaluating Blu-ray Disc media quality even at the higher capacity, which is expected to accelerate development of discs offering even more storage space.
Read and write at 33.4 GB per layer would be implemented using partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) signal processing. The new method can continue to use the existing Blu-ray optics.
The team developed the i-MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation) evaluation index for evaluating error rate and jitter at high density recording. Sony plans to propose widespread adoption of i-MLSE via the Blu-ray Disc Association and other avenues. Sony is a core member of the Association, making it likely that i-MLSE will be adopted as a standard. Read more about the technology at tech-on!. [via engadget]
